If you are a massage therapist or caregiver of the elderly, my book reveals the issues, insights and information on the special care seniors may not be getting and how to provide it.
The book, available on Amazon, speaks to the unique needs of seniors and is written by a senior. It is presented in a question and answer format for easy reading and learning. In ‘The SPIRIT Method of Massage for Seniors: Raising the Bar…A Primer for Massage Therapists and Caregivers’, SPIRIT is broken into chapters with several subchapters. They are:
- S is for Seniors
- P is for Physical Issues and Pathologies
- I is for Informed Inspiration
- R is for Respect
- I is for Infirmity and Identity
- T is for the Tools of Touch
Brief stories punctuate points made about abilities, care or mishandling, working with retirement homes and families, mobility devices, medications, and even about how one event can inspire two different people in very different ways. Yes, there are sections that deal with massage, but the book is about the human aging condition and those who wish to work in that space. It is about communication, understanding on more than an intellectual level, and relationships with the senior and their orbiting ‘others’. To their orbit, you are an ‘other’. The need for respectful boundaries is ever present.
This is not your ordinary massage book or your ordinary caregiver training. It is an invitation to work with our seniors in an enlightened manner, to know more about their lives and needs on both a physical and mental plane. I ask you to look and really see the needs that lie right before your eyes. This is the gift of SPIRIT.

"This an outstanding guide for beginners as well as seasoned therapists. Linda Mac Dougall takes you on an incredible and comprehensive journey providing relevant insight on older adults; beginning with a sense of who they are, common physical issues, moving towards self-care, mutual respect and the effects of declining health; concluding with the importance of touch. She refers to touch as energy transmitted by one body to another. In this regard, she beautifully describes the importance of touch by explaining how it is vital to the heart through providing individuals a sense of acceptance and worth.
Although there are many technical terms referenced in her book, each chapter is clear and well written so that it is an easy read for the general public. Besides being easy to follow, Linda provides the reader with a personal touch by sharing her experiences throughout the book. Through these types of connections, she captures the interest of her audience by providing maximum engagement. I highly recommend The Spirit Method of Massage for Seniors: Raising the Bar for anyone interested in sustaining quality of life for older adults."
